Fan is not just another Friday release in SRK's life,it's much more than that. Last year Sanjay Leela Banshali's Bajiao put SRK's utter trash Dilwale into stark contest. Acting,direction ,stage setting ,in every aspects Bajirao stood out. Bajirao proved again that a film's hero is it's concept not any Khan or Kapoor. That's why SRK needs a Gourav Chandna in his life to pull him up. And this is what Fan tells us.
The film opens with the story of Gourav Chandna, a cyber cafe owner ,lives at Indra Bihar in Delhi . He is what may be called one hell of a fan. A super obsessive fan of Ariyan Khanna ,a Bollywood superstar. The fan not just only likes him but also looks like him.He says at the opening : Ariyan ko banane me baad Jo mitti bachi thii usse mujhe bana dia. and then we see what a VFX can do. He completely looks like his superstar with some changes in his nose and lips. The fan's only purpose in life is to meet his "senior" Aryan Khanna . So the "junior" tries heart and soul to reach Mumbai .
The first half shows that Gourav wins a talent hunt show of his colony and decides to go Mumbai with the prize money.He not just only behaves like his star but also tries to copies his road of journey to Mumbai.So he travels on rail without ticket and hires room no. 205 in Hotel Delight which was taken by his superstar some 25 years ago. But when he reaches at the bungalow of Aryan, he feels that he is just a drop in the ocean of fans. He cries to the security : Main unn logo ke jessa fan nehi hun. And that's where the chaos ensues .
Gaurav's super obsession for his star makes him to do some super silly job. He beats the new age superstar Sid Kapoor and sends the video to Aryan. The star is shocked to see that and calls his "junior" . Gaurav wants a 5 minutes meeting with his star but Aryan sends police and locks him in jail . The fan is heartbroken when the star refuses to give him only five minutes from his busy scheduled. A sad Gaurav tells his star :app 48 ghante me mere 25 saal k sapne tor die. As Gaurav steps on the reality and destroys all the posters of Aryan from his room,we feel the difference between real life and that of silver screen .
The intensity of the first act turns abruptly absurd when the fan vows to destroy his star. With more energy he joins with the evil power inside him and goes to Dubrovnik and then London to make a fool of Aryan. He acts stupidly and spreads venom on Aryan but people could not understand that Gaurav playing the double role. They start hating Aryan and Gaurav feels great joy. The situation turns upside down as the star tries to catch his fan when the fan has no intention to stop.
I was never a die hard SRKians. Though Srk had given us many terrific performance in the past as dark character. From Bajiggar to Darr he made us his fan but this "Fan" will remain the best of all. Gaurav's speeches,body language,smile make him elated over all odds. He is the perfect fan yet with some flaws in his character. We started loving him from the very first act and couldn't stop even when he tries to destroy his star. Chak De!India remains my all-time favourite film but this classy act of SRK turns me into one of his "Fan"-atics.
Though the script could have been better, the second half is not impressive after all,but this film stands out in some other characteristics. Surprisingly it has no songs,no heroin,no so called hero for action scenes yet it is a path-breaker in Indian cinema. A Bollywood movie without a song is not a dream after all! As a movie Fanatic what more can we want!
